Wedding Style Lessons From The 2016 Academy Awards

This year’s Oscars red carpet featured plenty of stars looking like they could have stepped out of their own wedding.

While dark colors are traditionally more popular on the red carpet, stylish celebs like Lady Gaga, Priyanka Chopra, and Olivia Wilde all chose dramatic white evening gowns.

So what can brides learn from these Hollywood divas?

A dramatic back is always a fabulous idea. Olivia Wilde showcased this trend, confidently sporting a Valentino Haute Couture gown featuring a backless design. This can certainly work for brides who wish to create a dramatic and unexpected look.

A sweetheart neckline and a simple classic hairstyle are always appropriate. Lady Gaga wore a strapless white Brandon Maxwell pantsuit with a perfect sweetheart neckline. She balanced out the daring choice with understated makeup and glamorous old school waves.

Dramatic lace pairs perfectly with a clean, simple ponytail.  Priyanka Chopra chose a white lace Zuhair Murad gown. The strapless design featured a textured lace and a sparkling waist accent, and a simple low ponytail let the dress shine.

Which Oscar gowns inspired you to be creative with your wedding day style?

Wedding Gown Trains: Advice From The Experts

Shopping for wedding gowns can be fun, but overwhelming, and selecting a train length is just one more decision that a bride will need to make. Brides can, however, breathe a sigh of relief. This decision is all about common sense and personal preference!

Obviously, a longer, more regal train length equals a super-formal look. If that is truly the style of your wedding, go for a long train! Just be sure to have a plan regarding what to do with the long train later in the day (for instance, when you want to dance)! In most cases, a seamstress can add hooks to the gown to allow the train to be bustled, or lifted off the floor. There are a few different bustle styles, and an experienced seamstress should be able to guide you through the process of selecting the right one for your wedding gown.

If your wedding is on the other end of the formality spectrum, for instance a beach wedding or a casual backyard wedding, you may forgo a train completely, or wear a dress with a very short train.

If your event falls somewhere in the middle of the formality spectrum, the train length is truly just a matter of preference.

Here are some of the most common train lengths available:

Brush or Sweep: reaches just to the floor beneath your dress hem, “brushing” the floor as you walk. Perfect for beach, outdoor, or casual weddings. This train length is easiest to move in.

Court: a short train that attaches at waist and extends only one to two feet behind gown.

Chapel: formal to semi-formal style, attaches at waist and extends three to four feet behind gown.

Cathedral: attached at waist, extends dramatically for six to eight feet behind the gown. Often chosen for ultra-formal weddings.

Castillion: a French-inspired very long train of at least ten feet.

Royal: also sometimes called a “Monarch” train, since this look is popular in royal weddings. This train extends 10 or more feet from its attachment position at the waist.

Panel: this type of train isn’t part of the dress, but rather a separate panel of fabric about a foot wide that trails behind the dress. Usually detachable, panel trains can be made into any length desired. Some brides who buy their dress and later decide they want a train can have a professional create a customized panel train for them.

Watteau: worn from the shoulders and draping down to the bottom hem of the dress, the Watteau train dramatically alters a bride’s silhouette and can lend an almost Grecian feel to the dress. This unconventional choice is a good alternative to a veil for brides who don’t want to cover up their hairstyle but still have the look of a long, flowing veil. Bridesmaids’ dresses with Watteau trains are also very pretty.

Designer Spotlight: Julie Vino

At Blush Bridal Boutique, we are excited about all of the designers we carry, but adding a new designer is a particularly exciting occasion! We are hosting a trunk show this month featuring the amazing work of Israeli designer Julie Vino. This up and coming designer creates flattering gowns with a romantic, but edgy style unlike any we have seen before! Here is the scoop on this wedding gown diva!

“Since childhood I’ve been creative and artsy. While growing up and discovering fashion, I realized fashion would be the field where I could bring forth my passion for beauty, my creative talent and my unique stylistic vision.

I’ve studied fashion design in a leading academic institute followed by an internship in leading evening and bridal fashion houses in Canada and Israel. Five years ago I established my own brand of bridal and evening wear in Jaffa-Tel-Aviv,” states the designer on her website.

“My stylistic vision is unique and different in the bridal market. My bridal dresses are flattering and has a distinctive combination of classic style with modern touch and a strong connection to leading fashion trends.

The fabrics and different accessories provide me with infinite inspiratio. Therefore every season I scout the market and the different suppliers and import exclusive array of unique fabrics from all over the world; ethnic handmade brocade from India, unique lace from France and fabrics rich in details and embroidery from Italy. In a special department in my studio a specialist in embroidery is adding texture and additional embroidery to each fabric to make it even more exquisite,” the designer added.

Julie Vino’s talent and creative vision make her a perfect addition to Blush’s fabulous collection of wedding gowns. We can’t wait to show you her amazing dresses! And did we mention that we are the only bridal boutique on the east coast currently carrying this line?

What Silhouette Looks Best?

When helping a bride find her wedding gown, we often encounter a bride who says she doesn’t know what looks best on her body. If you google “what looks best on my body type”, you will be inundated with how to decide your body type and what  you should wear based on that. We don’t play by those rules because there is always an exception.

We encourage a bride to bring pictures of dresses she loves to give us an idea of her style then, using them as a guide, we pull gowns that will look great on her. The wedding and reception location sometimes also play a role, but, ultimately, the style of dress should be based on what looks best and makes you feel like a beautiful bride.

If there was a universal silhouette, it would be the A-line. An A-line dress is flattering to every body style because it is fitted through the bust and waist then graduates out at an angle to the hem of the gown. Style 8627 from Justin Alexander is a perfect example.

Ball gowns seem to have a bad reputation. Brides sometimes think you have to be very tall to make it work. Choosing the perfect dress is all about proportions. If you are vertically challenged (as I am at barely 5′), a ball gown is certainly an option if the bodice is short and ends at the natural waist. On the other hand, a tall bride can not only wear a ball gown, but a drop waist can be especially thinning on her. Style 8502 is a silk chiffon ball gown from Justin Alexander that has a natural waist.

blushbridal.jar8502

The same basic concept is applied to a mermaid, trumpet or fit and flair. Proportion-wise, a simpler style may help to elongate a bride’s silhouette if she is small. Sometimes we will have a bride say she would like to wear a fitted style, but she is concerned about her curves. Asymmetric draping, or ruching, goes a long way to cover those places on our bodies we like to mask.blushbridal.ja8683

The last style is a simple sheath. Fitted in the bust and waist, a sheath falls straight to the floor. A sheath style can be flattering on most body styles as well. They are typically a simpler silhouette and can appeal to more mature brides or those planning a destination wedding.

The best advice we can give when shopping for your wedding gown is to keep an open mind. Sales associates will use your pictures as a guide, but more often than not, a bride will ultimately choose a gown that is completely different than her original thought. Most of all, enjoy the shopping experience!

Oscar Night Inspiration For Stylish Brides

We all watch the Oscars for different reasons, right? Some love the fashion, others love the craft of film making, others love the fanfare of those gold statues being awarded to honor the best of the best.

Brides to be have a unique perspective, and can gather SOO many ideas from this one simple event! Let’s take a look at some inspirational styles that could work for wedding gowns!

Our first bridal look is based on the gown worn by Giuliana Rancic, who kicked off the E! Countdown to the Red Carpet pre-show. Rancic arrived at the Kodak Theatre looking flawless in her dazzling lace and tulle v-neck gown, sparkling heels and fabulous jewelry.

What can brides take from this look? Straps are becoming more popular, as is a lace bodice and tulle skirt. The fitted bodice and full skirt create a perfectly princess-y look! The wedding gown shown is by Justin Alexander.

Sandra Bullock looked amazing at the Oscars in her navy gown that exuded glamour. The satin gown featured a sweetheart neckline, dramatic draping and a subdued elegance that would make any actress envious. With her hair styled into sideswept curls, Bullock completed her classic look with total sophistication.

So what can brides take from this flawless look? Look for a strapless satin gown with a sweetheart neckline to achieve this beautiful Old-Hollywood look. Pleating in the bodice will help to create an hourglass shape. Of course, dramatic sideswept curls are also a great option for brides who want to exude glamour and style.
